About Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay: Garden Route Coastline Town
Plettenberg Bay sits on the Garden Route in the Western Cape, roughly 210 km east of Cape Town and 80 km west of George. The town occupies a headland between two river mouths — the Bitou and the Keurbooms — backing onto the Tsitsikamma mountain range. Its 6 km of white-sand beach, Robberg Beach, draws swimmers and surfers from October through April. Robberg Nature Reserve, a 4 km peninsula 5 km south of town, hosts one of South Africa's largest Cape fur seal colonies, numbering around 6,000 animals.
Where to Stay
Accommodation clusters in three areas: the Lookout headland above Central Beach, the quieter Beachy Head suburb to the east, and the Piesang Valley corridor inland along the N2. Properties range from self-catering cottages to 5-star lodges overlooking Keurbooms Lagoon. Whale-watching season runs June–November when southern right whales calve in the bay.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Drive the N2 from Cape Town (±2.5 hours) or fly into George Airport (80 km west) and hire a car.
- Best months: November–March for beach weather; June–August for whale sightings.
- Activities: Kayaking on Keurbooms Lagoon, canopy tours at Stormsrivier, and dolphin-watching boat trips from Central Beach.
