About Alaior

Alaior

Alaior sits at the geographic heart of Menorca, roughly 12 km east of the island's capital Mahón. With a population of around 9,000, it is the third-largest municipality on the island and one of its most characteristically Menorcan towns — white-washed facades, narrow limestone streets, and the 17th-century parish church of Santa Eulàlia anchoring the hilltop skyline.

The town draws visitors who want an authentic base away from the coastal resort crowds. Its central location puts the sandy beaches of Son Bou — one of the longest on Menorca at roughly 2.5 km — within 8 km to the south, while the calm coves of the north coast are equally reachable. Alaior is also known for its artisan cheese production; the local queso Mahón-Menorca PDO is made and sold here, and several factories offer direct tastings. Leather footwear workshops, a craft tradition going back generations, add another reason to stop rather than pass through.

Menorca's airport at Mahón is approximately 14 km from Alaior, making arrival straightforward. The island operates as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which limits large-scale development and keeps the interior towns, including Alaior, relatively quiet even in peak summer months of July and August.
