About es Castell

es Castell

es Castell sits at the eastern tip of Menorca, roughly 3 km from the island's capital Mahón. It holds a distinct place in Balearic history: the town was founded by British forces during their occupation of the island in the 18th century and was originally named Georgetown. That colonial past shows clearly in the grid-street layout and the Georgian-influenced architecture around the central square, Plaça de s'Esplanada.

Visitors come mainly for the deep natural harbour of Cales Fonts — a rocky inlet lined with seafood restaurants and boat moorings. The waterfront draws locals and tourists alike on summer evenings. Walkers follow the Camí de Cavalls coastal path, which passes the town and connects to nearby beaches such as Cala Sant Esteve, less than 2 km south. The town also sits close to the Castell de Sant Felip ruins, a fortification dating to the 16th century that controlled the harbour entrance.

es Castell is the easternmost municipality in Spain, a detail that earns it the first sunrise on the mainland. Ferries connecting Menorca to Barcelona and Valencia depart from Mahón port, a short taxi or bus ride away. The town itself is compact and walkable, with most hotels and apartments within easy reach of both the harbour and the main square.
