About es Migjorn Gran

es Migjorn Gran

Es Migjorn Gran sits at the centre of Menorca, roughly 8 kilometres north of the long sandy arc of Sant Tomàs beach on the island's southern coast. The village was only recognised as an independent municipality in 1989, making it the youngest in the Balearic Islands — a fact that surprises most visitors who find streets that look unchanged for centuries. Low whitewashed houses, a single main road, and the 18th-century church of Sant Cristòfol define the compact core.

Most guests arrive for slow-travel reasons: walking or cycling sections of the Camí de Cavalls, the medieval bridle path that circles the entire island. The stretch near es Migjorn Gran passes through pine woodland and drops to secluded coves — Cala Mitjana and Cala Mitjaneta among them — accessible only on foot. The village draws couples, families with older children, and cyclists who want a rural base without the resort crowds of Ciutadella or Maó.

The municipality holds fewer than 1,200 permanent residents. Accommodation options are limited and book early in July and August; most properties are small rural hotels or agrotourism estates rather than large resorts. The nearest commercial airport is Menorca Airport (MAH), approximately 25 kilometres east near Maó.
