About Almodóvar del Río
Almodóvar del Río
Almodóvar del Río is a small Andalusian town in the province of Córdoba, best known for its eight-towered Moorish castle — one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in southern Spain. The castle, built on Roman foundations and expanded under Moorish rule from the 8th century onward, sits 238 metres above sea level on a rocky promontory directly over the Guadalquivir river. In 2017 it gained international recognition when HBO used it as a filming location for Casterly Rock in Game of Thrones season seven.
The town itself sits 24 km west of Córdoba along the A-431 road, making it a practical base for visiting the Mezquita-Catedral without staying in the more expensive city centre. The surrounding area belongs to the Guadalquivir valley's olive and sunflower belt — the agricultural landscape here is flat and wide, a contrast to the dramatic ridge the castle occupies. Local visitors come primarily from Córdoba and Sevilla on day trips, while international travellers often stop en route between the two cities.
The castle is open to visitors year-round, with guided tours available in Spanish and English. Admission as of recent years is around €7 for adults. The town has a small historic quarter with a 16th-century parish church, and the riverside path below the castle walls offers direct views of the fortification from the water's edge.
