Córdoba sits in Andalusia, southern Spain, on the north bank of the Guadalquivir River — roughly 400 km south of Madrid and 145 km northeast of Seville. The city reached its peak as the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba in the 10th century, when it was among the largest cities in Europe. That era left a defining mark: the Mezquita-Catedral, a mosque-cathedral begun in 785 AD, draws more visitors than any other monument in Andalusia after the Alhambra. The medieval Jewish quarter, the Judería, surrounds it with narrow whitewashed lanes and flower-filled patios.

Visitors come primarily for the historic centre — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984 — and for the Festival de los Patios Cordobeses each May, when private courtyards open to the public in a competition dating to 1918. The festival itself earned UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status in 2012. Beyond heritage tourism, the city attracts food travelers drawn to salmorejo, a thick cold tomato soup, and rabo de toro, braised oxtail — both deeply rooted in local cooking.

Córdoba has a hot semi-arid climate; July and August regularly exceed 38 °C, making spring and autumn the most practical seasons to visit. The city is served by Córdoba railway station on the Madrid–Seville high-speed AVE line, with journey times of approximately 45 minutes from Seville and under two hours from Madrid.
