About Córdoba
Córdoba: Roman Bridges, Moorish Palaces and Whitewashed Courtyards
Córdoba sits on the Guadalquivir River in the heart of Andalusia, 166 km northeast of Seville by high-speed AVE rail. The city was the capital of Umayyad al-Andalus in the 10th century — then the largest city in Western Europe with nearly 500,000 residents. That legacy survives in the Mezquita-Catedral, a mosque-cathedral begun in 785 CE whose forest of 856 striped arches draws over two million visitors per year. The Roman Bridge, originally built under Julius Caesar and rebuilt under Augustus, spans the Guadalquivir just south of the old medina.
Where to Stay in Córdoba
Most hotels cluster in or around the Judería (Jewish Quarter), a tight grid of whitewashed lanes surrounding the Sinagoga de Córdoba (built 1315). The Centro Comercial district east of the Mezquita offers mid-range and budget properties with easy walking access. The Axerquía neighborhood, the city's medieval eastern quarter, hosts smaller guesthouses and a quieter atmosphere than the tourist core.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: AVE trains from Madrid reach Córdoba in under 2 hours; Seville is 45 minutes.
- Best season: April and May — Festival de los Patios runs early May (UNESCO-listed since 2012).
- Heat: July and August regularly exceed 40 °C; afternoon sightseeing is inadvisable.
- Mezquita entry: Free for morning Mass (weekdays 08:30–09:30); otherwise €11 standard admission.
