About Almuñécar

Almuñécar: Subtropical Coast on the Granada Shoreline

Almuñécar sits on the Costa Tropical, roughly 80 km east of Málaga and 70 km west of Almería, where the Sierra Nevada descends to the Mediterranean and creates a microclimate warm enough to grow mangoes, avocados, and custard apples year-round. The town traces its roots to Phoenician traders around 800 BC — the Romans called it Sexi Firmum Iulium — and the layered history is visible in the Castillo de San Miguel, a hilltop fortress whose foundations are partly Moorish and partly Roman. An Egyptian mummy unearthed here, now displayed in the castle's archaeological museum, dates to approximately 1700 BC.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster along Playa de San Cristóbal and the adjacent Paseo Cotobro, within walking distance of the old quarter and the Parque Ornitológico Loro Sexi, a free tropical-bird park. The fishing district of La Herradura, 6 km west, offers calmer waters and a handful of smaller properties favoured by divers.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: The nearest airport is Málaga-Costa del Sol (AGP), roughly 75 km by road; no direct rail connection exists.
  • Best season: May–June and September avoid peak crowds while temperatures stay above 25 °C.
  • Local market: The weekly Saturday market on Avenida Europa sells Costa Tropical produce directly from local growers.
