About Denia

Denia: Gateway to the Costa Blanca North

Denia sits at the foot of Montgó Natural Park on Spain's Costa Blanca, 100 km south of Valencia and 95 km north of Alicante. The city divides neatly between a working fishing port, a Moorish-era castle dating to the 11th century, and a seafront lined with rice-dish restaurants. The Dénia Castle rises 80 metres above the old quarter, offering clear sightlines across the bay toward the island of Ibiza, roughly 90 km offshore. Ferries to Ibiza and Formentera depart from Dénia port year-round, making the city a transit point as much as a destination.

Where to Stay in Denia

Most hotels cluster along Las Marinas beach to the north and Las Rotas rocky coves to the south. Las Rotas suits divers and snorkellers — the seabed here is a protected marine reserve. The old town around Calle Marqués de Campo keeps a handful of boutique properties within walking distance of the castle and the covered Mercado Municipal, where red prawns (gambas rojas de Dénia) command high prices for their sweetness.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Regular Alicante–Dénia bus services run via the AP-7 toll road; journey time is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.
  • Ferries: Baleària Lines operates sailings to Ibiza (3–4 hours) and Formentera; book ahead in July–August.
  • Climate: Summers are dry and hot; sea temperatures stay above 20 °C from June through October.
  • Local food: The arròs a banda (rice cooked in fish stock) is a protected regional dish — several restaurants on the port specialise in it.
