About Fontanars dels Alforins
Fontanars dels Alforins
Fontanars dels Alforins sits in the Vall d'Albaida comarca of Valencia's interior, roughly 80 km southwest of the city of Valencia and about 60 km from Alicante. The municipality occupies a high plateau at around 700 metres elevation — one of the highest wine-growing zones in the Valencian Community. That altitude produces sharp day-to-night temperature swings that preserve acidity in the grapes, and the area has built a reputation for Monastrell and Bobal reds with more structure than lower-elevation Valencian wines.
Most visitors arrive specifically for wine tourism. Bodegas such as Celler del Roure and Casa Don Ángel have drawn international attention, and the DO Valencia designation covers the local vineyards. The landscape beyond the vines is open scrubland and almond groves, with the Serra Mariola natural park accessible within 20 km to the north. The village itself is small — fewer than 500 residents — and the pace is quiet outside harvest season in September and October.
Accommodation options in the municipality are limited; most visitors base themselves here for one or two nights as part of a wider Valencia or Alicante itinerary. The nearest rail connection is in Ontinyent, approximately 15 km northeast, with services to Valencia.
