About Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura: Atlantic Dunes and Year-Round Sun
Fuerteventura is the second-largest of Spain's Canary Islands, covering 1,659 km² roughly 100 km off the northwest African coast. The island holds UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, awarded in 2009, largely because of the Corralejo Natural Park in the north — 11 km of protected white-sand dunes backed by clear turquoise shallows. The island's geology is ancient and arid; sparse volcanic hills and clay plains stretch between small towns like Betancuria, the island's original capital, founded in 1404.
Where to Stay in Fuerteventura
Most hotel stock concentrates in three resort corridors. Corralejo, on the northern tip, draws windsurfers and younger travelers; the Jandia Peninsula in the south offers longer beaches and larger all-inclusive resorts; Caleta de Fuste, near the airport, suits families with its sheltered bay. Budget properties start below €60/night in shoulder season; beachfront resorts on Playa de Sotavento — host of the annual Windsurf World Cup — command higher rates in July and August.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) handles direct flights from over 40 European cities; journey time from Madrid is roughly 2 hours 20 minutes.
- Climate: Average highs stay between 22 °C (January) and 30 °C (August), making the island workable year-round.
- Getting around: Hire cars are widely available and recommended; bus routes connect main resorts but run infrequently after 20:00.
