About Betancuria
Betancuria
Betancuria sits in a volcanic valley at the heart of Fuerteventura, shielded by the Betancuria Rural Park's ridgeline — a deliberate choice made in 1404 when the Norman conquistador Jean de Béthencourt founded it as the island's first capital. That status lasted until the 18th century, leaving behind a compact historic core that no other settlement on the island can match.
The Church of Santa María de Betancuria, rebuilt after a Berber raid in 1593, anchors the village square and remains the most complete example of colonial-era ecclesiastical architecture in the Canary Islands. Travellers who make the 30-kilometre drive south from Corralejo or north from Morro Jable come for the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum, the traditional craft shops along Calle Roberto Roldán, and the terracotta-hued facades that fill out the surrounding streets. The population sits at roughly 700 residents — one of the smallest municipalities in Spain — which keeps the pace unhurried even in peak season (December through March for European visitors escaping winter).
Fuerteventura airport at Puerto del Rosario, the current island capital, is approximately 35 kilometres northeast of Betancuria. Most visitors stay along the coast and take a half-day excursion inland; accommodation options within the village itself are limited to a handful of rural houses and a small number of hotel rooms, making early booking essential during Carnival season in February.
