Puerto del Rosario is the capital and largest city of Fuerteventura, the second-biggest island in Spain's Canary Islands archipelago. Situated on the island's eastern coast, it serves as the administrative, commercial, and transport hub — Fuerteventura Airport sits just 5 km south of the city centre. The city grew rapidly in the second half of the 20th century; its name, meaning "Port of the Rosary," reflects its origins as a modest harbour settlement. Today it is home to roughly 40,000 residents, making it one of the most populated cities in the Canary Islands.
Most visitors pass through Puerto del Rosario en route to the island's famous beaches — Corralejo to the north and Jandia to the south — but the city rewards those who stay. An open-air sculpture trail weaves through the streets, featuring over 100 permanent works by international artists. The port area has been renovated into a walkable waterfront, and the old quarter around Calle Virgen del Rosario retains low-rise colonial architecture. Budget travellers and business visitors tend to base themselves here, where hotel rates run lower than in the resort zones.
Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) connects Puerto del Rosario to major European cities year-round, with flight times of roughly 4 hours from the UK and 2 hours from mainland Spain. The city's central bus station links to all major island destinations.
