Plan your stay in La Oliva, Fuerteventura — volcanic landscapes, protected dunes at Corralejo, and year-round Atlantic winds for water sports.
La Oliva sits in the northeastern corner of Fuerteventura, one of Spain's Canary Islands, roughly 25 km north of the island's capital, Puerto del Rosario. The municipality takes its name from the olive tree — though the landscape is defined by volcanic plains, pale sand, and the jagged profile of Montana La Arena. The 16th-century Casa de los Coroneles, a colonial mansion that served as the seat of military governors for over two centuries, anchors the town center and remains the most architecturally significant building on the island. Nearby, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria dates to the same era and features a distinctive black-and-white bell tower visible from the surrounding flatlands.
Visitors come for two reasons: the beaches and the quiet. Corralejo, the municipality's coastal resort town, borders the Parque Natural de Corralejo — a protected dune system stretching roughly 10 km along the northern coast. The dunes reach heights of 30 meters and back some of the clearest Atlantic shallows on the island. Windsurfers and kitesurfers target the channel between Fuerteventura and Lobos Island, where consistent trade winds blow for most of the year. The inland village of La Oliva itself draws fewer tourists, making it a practical base for travelers who prefer space over nightlife.
Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) is approximately 30 km south of La Oliva. The island operates year-round direct flights from major European hubs including London, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam.
