Tías is home to Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote's main resort coast. Find hotels, beaches, and travel tips for this eastern Canary Island municipality.
Tías is a municipality on the eastern coast of Lanzarote, one of Spain's Canary Islands, sitting roughly 10 km south of the island capital Arrecife. The town itself is a quiet inland settlement of whitewashed buildings and volcanic-stone streets, but its coastline draws the bulk of visitors — Puerto del Carmen, the island's main resort strip, falls within Tías municipality. That 7 km seafront stretch holds the highest concentration of hotels, restaurants, and dive schools on Lanzarote, built up steadily from the 1970s onward.
Most people who stay in Tías come for the Atlantic beaches — Playa Grande and Playa de los Pocillos are the widest and most accessible — and for water sports including windsurfing, snorkelling, and sport fishing. The César Manrique Foundation, dedicated to the Lanzarote-born artist and architect who shaped the island's low-rise aesthetic, is located about 15 km north in Tahíche and makes a popular day trip. Timanfaya National Park, with its volcanic landscapes and geothermal demonstrations, lies around 25 km to the northwest.
Lanzarote Airport (ACE) is approximately 8 km from Puerto del Carmen, making transfers short. The island holds UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status — a designation that limits building height and restricts large-scale commercial signage across the municipality.
