About Tías
Tías: Lanzarote's Resort Coast and Volcanic Hinterland
Tías is a municipality on the south-east coast of Lanzarote, Canary Islands, roughly 10 km south-west of the island's capital Arrecife. The area is best known as the administrative home of Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote's largest resort strip, where a 6-km seafront promenade — the Avenida de las Playas — connects golden sand beaches including Playa Grande and Playa de los Pocillos. Inland, the white-walled village of Tías itself sits at around 200 m elevation, close to the César Manrique–influenced landscape that defines Lanzarote's aesthetic.
Where to Stay
Most hotels concentrate in Puerto del Carmen, offering direct beach access and proximity to diving schools along the volcanic reef. A smaller cluster of apartments and rural houses sits in the Tías village core, suited to travellers who prefer a quieter base with short drives to the coast. Lanzarote Airport (ACE) is approximately 5 km north-east of Puerto del Carmen — among the shortest airport-to-resort transfers in the Canary Islands.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: Local bus line 2 links Puerto del Carmen to Arrecife roughly every 30 minutes.
- Climate: Average high of 28 °C in August; winters stay mild at 19–21 °C, making year-round travel practical.
- Water sports: Dive centres along Avenida de las Playas offer PADI courses on volcanic reef sites within 2 km of shore.
