About Tinajo
Tinajo is a quiet agricultural municipality in the northwest of Lanzarote, Canary Islands, best known as the gateway to Timanfaya National Park — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of volcanic landscape formed by eruptions between 1730 and 1736. The parish church of San Roque, dating to the 18th century, anchors the small town centre, while the surrounding terrain of black lapilli fields tells the story of one of the most destructive volcanic events in recorded European history.
Visitors come primarily for Timanfaya, whose Montañas del Fuego sit roughly 4 km from the town. The park's geothermal activity remains intense enough that staff demonstrate boiling water poured into ground vents. Beyond the park, the La Geria wine region — where Malvasía grapes grow in hand-dug volcanic pits called zocos — stretches toward Tinajo's southern boundary, drawing wine tourists along the LZ-30 road. The municipality also borders El Jable, a pale sand corridor that crosses the island's interior and hosts endemic flora unique to Lanzarote.
Tinajo's permanent population is around 5,000 residents. The nearest major resort area, Puerto del Carmen, lies approximately 25 km southeast. Arrecife Airport (ACE) is roughly 30 km away, making Tinajo accessible as a base for travellers who prefer a rural setting over beach-resort infrastructure.
