About Lanzarote

Lanzarote: Volcanic Landscapes and Atlantic Light

Lanzarote sits 125 km off the Moroccan coast in the Atlantic Ocean, the easternmost of Spain's Canary Islands. UNESCO designated the entire island a Biosphere Reserve in 1993, recognising its extraordinary volcanic terrain shaped by eruptions between 1730 and 1736. The Timanfaya National Park covers 51 km² of frozen lava fields, cinder cones, and geothermal vents where ground temperatures reach 400 °C at shallow depth. Artist and architect César Manrique (1919–1992) defined the island's visual character — his insistence on low-rise, whitewashed construction kept international hotel chains from dominating the skyline.

Where to Stay

Most hotels concentrate in three coastal zones. Puerto del Carmen, 3 km from Arrecife Airport, holds the largest supply of 3- and 4-star properties along its 6 km beach promenade. Playa Blanca in the south suits travellers seeking quieter, newer resorts close to the ferry crossing to Fuerteventura. Costa Teguise, 10 km north of the capital Arrecife, attracts windsurfers and families with its sheltered bay.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Arrecife Airport (ACE) receives direct flights from most northern European cities; flight time from London is roughly 4 hours.
  • Getting around: Rent a car to reach Timanfaya and the northern Jameos del Agua cave complex; buses connect coastal resorts but run infrequently after 20:00.
  • Climate: Average annual temperature is 21 °C; trade winds keep summer highs below 30 °C most days.
  • Currency: Euro (EUR); most resort restaurants accept card payments.
