About San Bartolomé
San Bartolomé sits at the geographic centre of Lanzarote, roughly 10 km from the capital Arrecife and 15 km from the volcanic Timanfaya National Park. The municipality is the administrative heart of the island and home to the Museo Etnográfico Tanit, which documents Canarian rural life through original tools, wine presses, and domestic artefacts dating to the 18th century. The surrounding landscape is shaped by the 1730–1736 eruptions that buried villages and created the malpaís lava fields still visible from the main LZ-20 road.
Visitors come for two reasons: proximity to Lanzarote's interior wine country and a quieter base away from the resort strips of Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise. The local DO Lanzarote denomination produces Malvasía Volcánica grapes grown in hand-dug volcanic pits called zocos — a technique unique to the island. The village of Mozaga, within the municipality, is the birthplace of César Manrique's collaborator Jesús Soto, adding a layer of artistic heritage to the area.
San Bartolomé municipality covers approximately 160 km² and holds a resident population of around 19,000. The nearest airport, Lanzarote Airport (ACE), is 14 km east. Weekly markets operate on Saturdays in the town square.
