About Toledo
Toledo: Three Faiths, One Hilltop City
Toledo stands on a granite hill 70 km south of Madrid, encircled on three sides by the Tagus River. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, the old city preserves medieval streets where Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities coexisted for centuries. The Cathedral of Toledo, begun in 1226, holds paintings by El Greco and Velázquez. The Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, dating to around 1180, is one of the oldest synagogues standing in Europe. The Alcázar, rebuilt after Civil War destruction, now houses the Army Museum.
Where to Stay
Most hotels concentrate inside the walled city — Casco Histórico — and along the hillside descending toward the Bisagra Gate, the main northern entry built in 1559. A smaller cluster sits in the modern lower city around Plaza de la Reconquista, useful for drivers since old-city parking is very limited. The historic core is compact; key monuments sit within 10 minutes' walk of each other.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: High-speed trains from Madrid Atocha reach Toledo in 33 minutes; buses from Plaza Elíptica take about 75 minutes.
- Crowds: Weekday mornings offer quieter access to the Cathedral and synagogues.
- Currency: Marzipan and hand-forged damascene metalwork are the city's signature purchases — budget accordingly.
- Access: The old city is almost entirely pedestrian; steep cobblestone lanes make wheeled luggage difficult.
