About Yala
Yala: Safari Gateway on Sri Lanka's Southern Coast
Yala sits in Sri Lanka's Southern Province, roughly 300 km southeast of Colombo. The town serves primarily as the entry point to Yala National Park, the country's most visited wildlife reserve and home to one of the world's highest densities of leopards. The park covers approximately 979 km² across five blocks, with Block I open year-round to jeep safaris. Elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species are regularly sighted within a few kilometres of the main gate.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Most hotels and safari lodges cluster along the road between Tissamaharama (the nearest service town, 12 km north) and the Palatupana park entrance. Accommodation ranges from tented camps inside buffer zones to mid-range guesthouses in Tissa. Visitors typically base themselves in Tissamaharama and arrange early-morning or late-afternoon jeep safari departures from there. The nearest airport is Mattala Rajapaksa International (HRI), approximately 45 km northwest.
Practical Tips
- Best season: February to July offers the driest conditions and densest wildlife concentrations near waterholes.
- Safari hours: Park gates open at 06:00 and close at 18:00; entry requires a permit purchased at Palatupana.
- Getting there: Buses run from Colombo to Tissamaharama in roughly 6–7 hours; private transfers take about 4.5 hours.
