About Kantang

Kantang: Southern Thailand's Railway Port on the Trang River

Kantang sits at the mouth of the Trang River, roughly 24 km south of Trang city in southern Thailand. The town earned its place in Thai history as the southern terminus of the railway line completed in 1913 under King Rama VI — the old Kantang Railway Station, a colonial-era timber building, still stands and is preserved as a local landmark. The surrounding district mixes mangrove coastline, fishing villages, and rubber plantations that define the economy of Trang Province.

Where to Stay

Accommodation clusters near the riverside market and along the main road toward the pier. Most properties are small guesthouses and mid-range hotels catering to domestic travelers, ferry passengers heading to Koh Libong or Koh Mook, and workers in the fishing industry. The islands of the Trang Archipelago are accessible by longtail boat from Kantang pier, making the town a practical overnight base.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Songthaews run between Trang Bus Terminal and Kantang market roughly every 30 minutes; the fare is around 30 THB.
  • Island access: Ferries to Koh Libong depart from Kantang pier — schedules vary by season, so confirm the day before.
  • Best months: November through April brings drier weather; the monsoon arrives May–October.
  • Currency: ATMs are available near the market; card acceptance is limited at smaller guesthouses.
