About Djerba
Djerba: Mediterranean Island at Tunisia's Southern Shore
Djerba is a low-lying island of 514 km² connected to mainland Tunisia by a 7-km Roman causeway, the El Kantara dyke, and a ferry from Jorf. Positioned in the Gulf of Gabès, roughly 500 km south of Tunis, the island has drawn traders, pilgrims, and sun-seekers for millennia. The El Ghriba synagogue in the village of Hara Sghira is one of North Africa's oldest Jewish houses of worship, dating its foundation to the 6th century BCE; an annual pilgrimage draws thousands every spring. The Houmt Souk medina, the island's main town, clusters whitewashed fondouks and a 15th-century Ottoman fortress, Borj El Kebir, around a working fishing harbour.
Where to Stay in Djerba
Most resort hotels line the Zone Touristique, a coastal strip northeast of Houmt Souk near Sidi Mahrez beach. Mid-range and boutique guesthouses concentrate in Houmt Souk itself and the pottery village of Guellala to the south. The interior village of Erriadh gained international attention after a 2014 street-art project painted over 150 murals on its walls.
Practical Tips
