About Hammamet

Hammamet: Tunisia's Mediterranean Resort Coast

Hammamet sits on the Cap Bon peninsula, roughly 60 km south of Tunis along the Gulf of Hammamet. The city divides into two distinct zones: the original Medina quarter, enclosed by 15th-century walls, and Yasmine Hammamet, a purpose-built resort district developed from the 1990s onward around a replica medina and marina. That contrast — genuine historic fabric next to modern all-inclusive hotels — defines the visitor experience here more than anywhere else on the Tunisian coast.

The majority of visitors arrive from Europe on charter flights into Enfidha-Hammamet International Airport (NBE), 45 km north of the centre. Package tourism dominates, but independent travellers use Hammamet as a base for day trips to Kairouan (100 km west), one of Islam's holiest cities, and to the Roman ruins at Thuburbo Majus. Beach season runs April through October; July and August see peak arrivals and the annual International Festival of Hammamet, held in an open-air theatre built inside the Kasbah.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: NBE airport connects to major European hubs; shared louage taxis link Hammamet to Nabeul (12 km north) year-round.
  • Currency: Tunisian dinar (TND); exchange at banks near the Medina gate rather than hotel desks.
  • Dress: Light cotton works for summer heat; pack a layer for air-conditioned restaurants in Yasmine Hammamet.
