About Tunis

Tunis: Medina Alleyways and Carthaginian Coast

Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, sits at the western end of the Lake of Tunis, roughly 15 km inland from the Mediterranean shore. The Medina of Tunis — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 — contains over 700 monuments, including the Zitouna Mosque founded in 698 AD. Its souks trade in jasmine garlands, hand-woven carpets, and copper goods along lanes unchanged since the 13th century. North of the Medina, the French-built Avenue Habib Bourguiba stretches 1.2 km through the colonial-era ville nouvelle, lined with cafés and municipal theatres.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster around Avenue Habib Bourguiba and the adjacent Lafayette district for direct metro access. Budget guesthouses occupy restored medina townhouses called riads; 4-star business hotels concentrate near Les Berges du Lac, the modern financial district 5 km northeast of the city centre. The seaside suburb of La Marsa, 20 km from central Tunis, draws leisure travellers with beach access.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: The TGM light rail connects central Tunis to La Marsa in 40 minutes with stops at Carthage and Sidi Bou Saïd.
  • Day trips: Carthage ruins lie 15 km northeast; Sidi Bou Saïd, the blue-and-white clifftop village, is 20 km from the Medina.
  • Currency: The Tunisian dinar (TND) is non-convertible abroad — exchange on arrival.
  • Timing: April–June and September–October offer temperatures between 20–28°C.
