About Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi: Capital on the Arabian Gulf
Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, sits on a T-shaped island at the southern end of the Persian Gulf. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — completed in 2007 and built to hold 41,000 worshippers — draws over 6 million visitors a year and defines the city's architectural identity. The Corniche, an 8-kilometre waterfront boulevard, separates the downtown hotel corridor from the Gulf shore.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate in three zones. The Corniche and Downtown district suits business travelers with walkable access to government offices and the waterfront. Yas Island, roughly 35 km east of central Abu Dhabi, anchors resort tourism around Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, and the Yas Marina Circuit — Formula 1 Grand Prix venue since 2009. Saadiyat Island, 10 km northeast of downtown, holds the Louvre Abu Dhabi (opened November 2017) and a string of beach resorts.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: Taxis and ride-hail apps dominate; Abu Dhabi has no metro as of 2026.
- Climate: Summer temperatures exceed 45 °C; October through April is markedly cooler.
- Dress code: Modest dress is required at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — abayas are provided free at the entrance gate.
- Currency: UAE dirham (AED); most hotels quote rates in both AED and USD.
