About Fujairah

Fujairah: East Coast Emirate on the Gulf of Oman

Fujairah sits on the UAE's eastern seaboard, facing the Gulf of Oman rather than the Persian Gulf — the only emirate entirely on that coast. The Hajar Mountains rise sharply behind the city, compressing the coastal strip to a narrow band of beaches, coral reefs, and date-palm groves. The emirate covers roughly 1,165 km², making it one of the smaller emirates, yet it holds the oldest mosque on the Arabian Peninsula at Al-Badiyah, dated to 1446 CE. Fujairah Fort, built in the 16th century and restored in 2000, anchors the old town and overlooks the archaeological site of Al-Hayl Castle.

Where to Stay

Hotels cluster along Al-Faseel Road near the sandy beaches of Al-Aqah, roughly 30 km north of the city centre, and around the Corniche in downtown Fujairah. Al-Aqah draws divers and snorkelers, as the reef at Snoopy Island — a small outcrop 200 m offshore — supports sea turtles and reef sharks accessible to certified divers through padi-certified centres. Downtown properties suit business travellers using the nearby Port of Fujairah, one of the world's largest bunkering hubs.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Dubai International Airport lies approximately 130 km west; the drive via Route 44 through the Hajar Mountains takes 90–100 minutes.
  • Best season: October to April offers temperatures between 20–30 °C; summer humidity peaks July–August.
  • Dress code: Modest attire applies at Al-Badiyah Mosque and the fort site.
  • Currency: UAE dirham (AED); most hotels accept major credit cards.
