About Anglesey

Anglesey: Wales's Largest Island Between Two Bridges

Anglesey (Welsh: Ynys Môn) sits off the northwest coast of Wales, connected to the mainland by the Menai Suspension Bridge (opened 1826) and the Britannia Bridge over the Menai Strait. The island covers 714 sq km and holds more designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty than any other part of Wales. The Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path traces 214 km around the shoreline, passing sea stacks, estuaries, and Iron Age burial chambers including Bryn Celli Ddu, dated to around 3000 BC.

Where to Stay

Most hotels and guesthouses cluster around Holyhead (the main ferry port for Dublin services), Beaumaris on the eastern shore, and Llanfairpwllgwyngyll — the village known for its 58-letter name. Beaumaris Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site completed in 1295, anchors the town's small accommodation scene. Walkers and cyclists favour the quieter southwest near Rhosneigr and Aberffraw. Birdwatchers target the South Stack cliffs near Holyhead, managed by the Rspb, where choughs and puffins nest from April to July.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Trains from London Euston reach Llanfairpwll or Holyhead in under 3.5 hours via the North Wales Coast Line.
  • Getting around: A car is practical; bus coverage between villages is limited to a few routes.
  • Ferry connection: Irish Ferries and Stena Line operate multiple daily crossings from Holyhead to Dublin Port (approx. 3 hrs 10 min by fast ferry).
  • Season: Coastal paths are accessible year-round; spring and early autumn offer fewer crowds and clearer skies for cliff wildlife.
