About Newport
Newport: River Usk Gateway to South Wales
Newport sits on the River Usk in southeast Wales, roughly 12 miles southwest of Bristol and 23 miles east of Cardiff. The city grew on iron and coal shipments through Newport Docks, one of the busiest coal-exporting ports in the world during the 19th century. That industrial backbone still shapes the streetscape, most visibly in the Transporter Bridge (1906), a rare transporter-type structure listed at Grade I and one of only a handful still operating worldwide. The Newport Museum and Art Gallery on John Frost Square holds the Newport Charter of 1385 and a notable collection of Roman artefacts excavated from Caerleon, the legionary fortress 3 miles north.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster around the city centre and Friars Walk retail district, putting guests within walking distance of Newport railway station. A smaller cluster serves the Celtic Manor Resort corridor on the A48, favoured by golf visitors and conference delegates — the resort hosted the 2010 Ryder Cup. Budget travellers find chain hotels along the M4 corridor; business guests tend to book near the Coldra junction.
Practical Tips
- Rail access: Direct trains from London Paddington reach Newport in around 1 hour 45 minutes via Great Western Railway.
- Caerleon: Allow a half-day to visit the Roman amphitheatre and baths, 3 miles by bus from Newport city centre.
- Parking: The city centre has several multi-storey car parks; overnight rates are generally lower than Cardiff.
