About White Rock
White Rock: Beachfront City on the Semiahmoo Shore
White Rock sits on the Semiahmoo Peninsula in Surrey, British Columbia, roughly 45 km south of Vancouver and 4 km north of the Canada–US border crossing at Blaine, Washington. The city takes its name from a 486-tonne glacial erratic boulder painted white on the beach — a landmark used as a navigation point since Coast Salish times. The 470-metre pier, one of the longest in Canada, extends into Semiahmoo Bay and anchors a beachfront promenade lined with seafood restaurants, ice cream shops, and rental outfitters.
Where to Stay in White Rock
Hotels and inns cluster near Marine Drive and the upper town along Johnston Road, which runs parallel to the beach roughly 60 metres uphill. Guests on Marine Drive walk to the beach in under five minutes; Johnston Road properties offer quieter nights and easier parking. Cross-border travellers from Washington State often use White Rock as a Canadian base, since the Peace Arch Border Crossing (open 24 hours) is a short drive south.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: TransLink bus routes connect White Rock to Surrey Central Station on the SkyTrain Expo Line; the trip takes about 50 minutes to downtown Vancouver.
- Beach season: July and August see the warmest water temperatures, around 18 °C; the promenade stays open year-round.
- Parking: Metered stalls on Marine Drive fill by 11 a.m. on summer weekends — the upper town parkade on Roper Avenue is a reliable alternative.
