About Dunhuang

Dunhuang: Silk Road Oasis at the Edge of the Gobi

Dunhuang sits in northwest Gansu Province, roughly 1,200 km from Lanzhou, where the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts converge. For over 2,000 years it served as a critical waypoint on the Silk Road, and that history is still visible at every turn. The Mogao Caves — 492 Buddhist grottoes carved into a cliff face between the 4th and 14th centuries — hold the world's largest repository of early Buddhist art and were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Travelers serious about the caves should book timed tickets weeks in advance; daily visitor numbers are capped.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Most hotels cluster near the Shazhou Night Market on Yangguan East Road, a 10-minute drive from the Mogao site. The Mingsha Sand Dunes and Crescent Lake lie 6 km south of the city center and are walkable from the southern hotel zone. Dunhuang Mogao International Airport connects to Xi'an, Lanzhou, and Urumqi; high-speed rail does not yet reach the city, so the nearest rail hub is Liuyuan Station, 130 km northeast.

Practical Tips

  • Best season: April to October; July and August bring peak crowds and temperatures above 38 °C in the dunes.
  • Mogao tickets: Reserve the standard 2-hour guided tour via the official Mogao Caves website; special cave tickets sell out months ahead.
  • Currency: ATMs in the city centre accept foreign cards, but carry cash for smaller guesthouses near the dunes.
  • Dress: Pack a windbreaker — sand-laden gusts hit even in summer evenings.
