About Bogotá
Bogotá: High-Altitude Capital on the Andean Savanna
Bogotá sits at 2,640 metres above sea level on the Sabana de Bogotá, a plateau in the Eastern Andes of Colombia. Founded in 1538 by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, the city now holds roughly 8 million residents and functions as Colombia's political, financial, and cultural centre. The colonial core, La Candelaria, concentrates centuries-old churches, the Museo del Oro (with 55,000 pre-Columbian gold pieces), and the Plaza de Bolívar within a walkable grid east of Carrera 10. North of the centre, Chapinero and Zona Rosa hold mid-range and upscale hotels alongside restaurants and the lively nightlife strip of Zona G.
Where to Stay in Bogotá
Most hotel inventory clusters along the Avenida El Dorado corridor and in Usaquén, a former municipality annexed in 1954 that retains a cobblestone plaza and Sunday antiques market. Business travellers favour El Chicó for proximity to the financial district. Budget accommodation concentrates in La Candelaria near the university quarter. El Dorado International Airport sits 15 km northwest; the TransMilenio BRT line connecting the terminal to downtown runs every few minutes during peak hours.
Practical Tips
- Altitude: Pack ibuprofen and allow 24 hours to acclimatise before heavy activity.
- Getting around: The Sitp urban bus network and TransMilenio cover most neighbourhoods; taxis via the InDriver or Cabify apps are safer than hailing on-street.
- Weather: Bogotá averages 14 °C year-round; carry a waterproof layer regardless of season.
