About Medellín
Medellín: From Industrial Valley to Latin America's Innovation Capital
Medellín sits in the Andes at 1,495 metres above sea level, which gives it a near-constant spring climate averaging 22 °C year-round — a fact that earned it the nickname La Ciudad de la Eterna Primavera. The city of 2.5 million anchors the Aburrá Valley in Antioquia department, roughly 250 km northwest of Bogotá by air. Its transformation from a troubled industrial city in the 1990s into a global urban-design reference point is documented in the 2013 Urban Land Institute Award for Excellence — the first Latin American city to win it.
Where to Stay
El Poblado is the primary hotel district, centred on Parque El Poblado and Avenida El Poblado, with the highest concentration of international-brand and boutique properties. Laureles-Estadio, west of the Río Medellín, attracts longer-stay travellers seeking local neighbourhood character. El Centro and La Candelaria put guests near Plaza Botero — which displays 23 bronze sculptures by Fernando Botero — and the Museo de Antioquia.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The Metro de Medellín (Line A east-west, Line B north-south) integrates with Metrocable gondola lines reaching Comunas hillside neighbourhoods including Santo Domingo Savio.
- Climate: Pack a light layer for evenings above 1,500 m, even in summer.
- Currency: Colombian peso (COP); ATMs widely available in El Poblado.
- Airport: José María Córdova International Airport lies 35 km southeast in Rionegro; allow 45–60 minutes by taxi to El Poblado.
