About Cali
Cali: Salsa Capital of the Americas
Cali, Colombia's third-largest city and capital of Valle del Cauca department, sits 995 metres above sea level in the Cauca River valley, roughly 300 km southwest of Bogotá. Founded in 1536 by Sebastián de Belalcázar, the city earned its global reputation through salsa — a style refined here into a fast-footwork form distinct from Cuban or New York variants. The Juanchito district and clubs along Avenida 5N operate nightly, drawing dancers from across Latin America. Every December, the Feria de Cali (26–30 Dec) fills the streets with parades, concerts, and competitions attracting over two million attendees.
Where to Stay in Cali
Most hotels cluster in El Peñón, a residential area with tree-lined streets and mid-range guesthouses, and in Granada, the main dining and nightlife corridor north of the city centre. Business travellers tend to book near Avenida Colombia in the Centro district. The Barrio San Antonio neighbourhood, set on a hill with colonial-era architecture, offers boutique options within walking distance of the 1747 Iglesia de San Antonio.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: Cali's MIO BRT system covers most zones; taxis and ride-app services fill the gaps at night.
- Climate: The city averages 24 °C year-round; afternoon rains are common April–May and October–November.
- Airport access: Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport (CLO) sits 20 km northeast — allow 40 minutes by taxi during peak hours.
