About Jardin
Jardín: Colonial Squares and Coffee Slopes in Southern Antioquia
Jardín is a small municipality in southern Antioquia, Colombia, roughly 135 km southwest of Medellín. Founded in the mid-19th century, it retains one of the best-preserved colonial streetscapes in the region — cobblestone lanes, brightly painted bahareque houses, and the neo-Gothic Basílica Menor de la Inmaculada Concepción anchoring the central Parque Principal. The surrounding mountains rise steeply into coffee-growing terrain at elevations between 1,700 and 2,100 metres, where small family farms still process beans by hand.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Hotels in Jardín concentrate around the Parque Principal and along Calle 8, placing guests within walking distance of the market, local restaurants, and the cable car (teleférico) that climbs to the Cristo Rey viewpoint. Visitors traveling from Medellín arrive by bus from the Terminal del Sur, a roughly 3.5-hour journey through winding Andean roads. A chiva (traditional open-sided bus) connects the town to outlying coffee farms.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Buses depart Medellín's Terminal del Sur several times daily; book a seat in advance on weekends.
- Weather: Afternoons bring brief rains year-round at this altitude — pack a light waterproof layer.
- Currency: Most small hospedajes and restaurants accept cash only; withdraw pesos in Medellín before arriving.
- Best time: December–January and June–July offer the driest conditions for hiking the Reserva Natural Jardín trails.
