Cassis: Limestone Calanques and a Working Fishing Port

Cassis sits on the Côte Bleue east of Marseille, 23 km along the D559. The town is flanked by Cap Canaille, the highest sea cliff in France at 394 metres, and the Calanques National Park, established in 2012. Three navigable calanques — En-Vau, Port-Miou, and Port-Pin — cut into white limestone just west of the harbour. The old port dates to the Roman era; the current quay dates from the 18th century and still operates as a working fishing dock alongside tourist boats.

Where to Stay

Hotels cluster around the Quai des Baux waterfront and the narrow lanes of the vieille ville. Properties range from small family-run chambres d'hôtes to modest 3-star hotels with sea-facing terraces. The hill above the port holds Le Château de Cassis, a private estate visible from the bay. Cassis produces a protected AOC white wine — the vineyards sit directly behind the town centre on the slopes below Cap Canaille.

Practical Tips

• Getting there: Trains from Marseille Saint-Charles run to Gare de Cassis in roughly 35 minutes; from the station a shuttle bus or 2 km walk reaches the port.
• Calanques access: Road access to En-Vau is restricted in summer; arrive by boat from the port or hike from the Col de la Gardiole trailhead.
• Parking: Pack patience — village parking fills before 9 a.m. in July and August. Use the Park-and-Ride at La Viguerie.
• Season: Shoulder months (April–May, September–October) offer cooler hiking conditions and shorter queues at the port restaurants.
