About Hyères

Hyères: Palms, Salt Marshes, and the Var Coast

Hyères is the oldest seaside resort on the French Riviera, a title it earned in the 19th century when aristocrats and writers — including Robert Louis Stevenson — wintered here for the mild Mediterranean climate. The city sits 18 km east of Toulon in the Var département, flanked by the Salins des Pesquiers salt flats to the south and the medieval hilltop quarter of Vieux Hyères to the north. The Giens Peninsula extends a further 7 km into the sea, forming a double tombolo unique in Europe and providing access to ferry crossings to the Îles d'OrPorquerolles, Port-Cros, and Île du Levant.

Where to Stay in Hyères

Hotels cluster in three distinct zones: the town centre around Place Massillon, the beach-front strip at L'Almanarre on the west side of the Giens tombolo, and the marina district of Port Saint-Pierre. L'Almanarre draws kite-surfers year-round due to consistent thermal winds; the IKA Kiteboarding World Championships have been held here. Visitors targeting the islands stay closer to the Tour Fondue ferry terminal at the peninsula's tip.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Toulon-Hyères Airport (code TLN) receives direct flights from Paris and several European cities; the terminal is 3 km from the city centre.
  • Ferries: Book Porquerolles crossings in advance during July–August; capacity fills by mid-morning.
  • Seasonality: Spring (April–May) offers lower hotel rates and cooler conditions ideal for cycling the salt marsh trails.
  • Currency: Euros; most hotels accept cards, but smaller guesthouses near Vieux Hyères may prefer cash.
