About La Ciotat

La Ciotat: Birthplace of Cinema on the Calanques Coast

La Ciotat, a port city 30 km east of Marseille on the Côte Bleue, holds a specific place in cultural history: on 21 September 1895, the Lumière brothers screened L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat at the Eden Théâtre, the world's oldest operating cinema. That building, on Boulevard Lamartine, still shows films today. The city also claims a role in the codification of pétanque — a version of the game was formalised here in 1907 at the Boulodrome de La Ciotat.

Where to Stay in La Ciotat

Hotels concentrate around the Vieux Port and along the seafront promenade toward Plage du Bestouan. The rocky Calanque de Figuerolles, a 20-minute walk from the centre, draws hikers and snorkelers. The offshore Île Verte — reachable by ferry in 15 minutes — adds a day-trip option popular from June through August.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: TER trains connect La Ciotat to Marseille Saint-Charles in roughly 40 minutes; the station sits 1.5 km from the port.
  • Season: July and August bring peak crowds; May and September offer calmer beaches and lower hotel rates.
  • Parking: Street parking near the Vieux Port fills quickly in summer — aim for the Parking du Théâtre Eden off Boulevard Lamartine.
