About Hohrod

Hohrod: Vosges Mountain Village Above the Munster Valley

Hohrod is a small commune in the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace, France, sitting at roughly 680 metres elevation on the eastern slopes of the Vosges Mountains. The village overlooks the Munster Valley, known for the pungent washed-rind cheese that bears its name. The surrounding landscape consists of forested ridges, summer pastures called chaumes, and trails that connect to the Route des Crêtes — the ridge road running the length of the Vosges. Colmar, the nearest large town, lies approximately 25 km to the east.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Hohrod draws walkers, cross-country skiers, and travellers seeking calm between the Alsatian wine route and the high Vosges. Accommodation is small-scale: family-run hotels and gîtes rather than large chains. The Grand Ballon, the highest peak in the Vosges at 1,424 m, is reachable within a short drive. The nearest train station is Munster, about 5 km downhill, with connections to Colmar and onward to Strasbourg.

Practical Tips

  • Season: Summer (June–September) offers the clearest hiking conditions; snow can close upper roads from December to March.
  • Local food: Munster cheese and tarte flambée are available in valley restaurants a short drive below.
  • Getting there: From Colmar, take the D417 west through Munster, then the D5 up to Hohrod.
