About Munster
Munster
Munster is a small town in the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace, eastern France, set in the Fecht valley at the foot of the Vosges mountains. The town gives its name to one of France's most recognized cheeses — Munster AOP — produced in the surrounding valley farms since at least the 7th century. The historic center retains its half-timbered architecture and a Protestant temple that dates to the Reformation era, reflecting the region's mixed religious heritage.
Visitors arrive primarily for the Route des Crêtes scenic drive, which runs along the Vosges ridge above the town and connects to ski resorts at Le Markstein and Grand Ballon — the highest peak in the Vosges at 1,424 meters. Summer hikers use Munster as a base for trails into the Parc Naturel Régional des Ballons des Vosges. The town hosts a annual Fête du Munster cheese festival each summer, drawing food travelers from across the region.
Munster sits roughly 20 kilometers west of Colmar, which has direct rail connections to Strasbourg and Basel. Most hotels in town are small family-run properties; larger accommodation options are available in Colmar.
