About Soultzeren

Soultzeren: Gateway to the Munster Valley

Soultzeren is a small village in the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace, France, situated in the Vallée de Munster roughly 5 km south of the town of Munster. The surrounding Vosges hillsides rise steeply on both sides, channelling visitors toward marked hiking trails that connect to the Route des Crêtes ridge road above. The village sits at approximately 400 m elevation, making summer temperatures noticeably cooler than the Rhine plain below.

Where to Stay & Getting Around

Hotels and gîtes in Soultzeren serve walkers, cyclists, and travellers seeking a base for the wider Munster valley. Colmar, the nearest large city, lies about 20 km east via the D417. Train travellers arrive at Munster station, then continue by local bus or taxi the final few kilometres. The area is well known for Munster AOP cheese, produced on nearby farms, and the autumn foliage along the valley floor draws visitors from September through October.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Drive the D417 from Colmar; journey takes roughly 25 minutes.
  • Season: July–August for hiking; late September for quieter trails and harvest markets.
  • Pack layers: Evening temperatures drop sharply at valley elevations even in summer.
  • Local produce: Several farms along the valley road sell Munster AOP cheese directly.
