Alghero sits on the northwest coast of Sardinia, enclosed by medieval limestone walls that date to the 14th century. The old town — known locally as Barceloneta — retains a Catalan character rooted in the Crown of Aragon's colonisation of 1354. Street signs appear in both Italian and Catalan, and the local dialect, Algherese, is still spoken by a small community of residents. The harbour faces the Gulf of Asinara, and the Torre di Sulis and Torre di Sant'Elmo punctuate the seawall at regular intervals.

Visitors arrive for the combination of clear water beaches, historic architecture, and the nearby Grotte di Nettuno — sea caves accessible by boat from the port or by a 654-step staircase cut into the Capo Caccia cliff face. Divers target the protected marine area of Capo Caccia–Isola Piana. Families favour the sandy beaches north of the city, particularly Spiaggia di Maria Pia, roughly 4 km from the centre. The city also serves as a base for exploring the Nuragic site of Palmavera, a Bronze Age settlement located about 10 km along the coastal road.

Alghero Airport (AHO), formally Fertilia Airport, sits approximately 12 km north of the city and handles seasonal direct flights from several European cities. The historic centre is compact and walkable; the main corso runs from Porta Terra to the cathedral of San Francesco, a Gothic-Aragonese church with a detached bell tower.
