About Alghero
Alghero: Catalan Coral Town on Sardinia's Northwest Coast
Alghero sits on a limestone promontory in northwestern Sardinia, roughly 35 km south of Fertilia Airport. Founded under Aragonese rule in the 14th century, the city retains a living Catalan dialect — Alguerès — still spoken by a minority of residents, making it unlike any other Italian town. The walled old town (Carrer Major, Torre di San Giovanni) drops directly to the sea, and the Bastioni Marco Polo promenade runs the full length of the medieval walls above the harbor.
Where to Stay in Alghero
Most hotels concentrate in three zones: the historic centre inside the walls for atmosphere, the Lido di Alghero strip to the north for beach access, and the Maria Pia pinewood area for quieter, family-oriented stays. Neptune's Grotto (Grotte di Nettuno), a sea cave 24 km west by road or reachable by daily boat from the port, draws day-trippers who often base themselves here overnight.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Fertilia Airport (AHO) is 12 km north; taxis take about 20 minutes, buses run hourly.
- Best season: May–June and September keep crowds and prices lower than July–August peaks.
- Coral shopping: Alghero is Italy's main red coral crafting centre; the weekly market on Via Sassari runs Wednesday mornings.
- Local transport: A cycle path links the old port to the Lido beach, covering roughly 4 km along the bay.
