About Durgali/Dorgali
Dorgali
Dorgali sits in Nuoro province, central-eastern Sardinia, roughly 30 km from Nuoro city and directly above the Gulf of Orosei. The town itself stands at around 400 metres elevation in the Supramonte limestone massif. Below it, the coastal hamlet of Cala Gonone — technically part of Dorgali municipality — gives direct access to sea caves including Grotta del Bue Marino, mapped by speleologists since the 1950s. The canyon of Gorropu, one of Europe's deepest gorges at up to 500 metres, begins within the municipality and draws trekkers between April and October.
Visitors split between two profiles: hikers and climbers targeting Supramonte trails and the Codula di Luna canyon route, and beach-goers reaching coves like Cala Luna and Cala Sisine by boat from Cala Gonone harbour. The Nuragic village of Serra Orrios, dated to around 1500 BCE, adds an archaeological layer that few coastal resorts nearby can match. Dorgali also produces Cannonau DOC wine from local estates, and the weekly market on Thursdays sells pecorino and hand-woven textiles.
The SS125 Orientale Sarda road connects Dorgali to Olbia airport (roughly 120 km north) and Cagliari airport (roughly 200 km south). Ferries to the mainland depart from Olbia or Arbatax, about 60 km south. Most accommodation concentrates in Cala Gonone for beach access, with agriturismo options in the Dorgali hinterland.
