About Garteddi/Galtellì
Galtellì / Garteddi
Galtellì (Sardinian: Garteddi) sits in the Nuoro province of central-eastern Sardinia, roughly 18 km inland from the Orosei coast. The village occupies a limestone ridge above the Cedrino river valley and counts around 2,000 residents. Its 11th-century Romanesque church of San Pietro, built under Pisan influence, anchors the historic centre and remains one of the best-preserved medieval religious structures in Baronia.
The town is widely recognised as the primary model for the village of Orune in Grazia Deledda's 1913 novel Canne al Vento — the book that contributed to her 1926 Nobel Prize in Literature. Literary travellers visit to trace scenes from the novel through the narrow basalt lanes and the church square. The surrounding landscape of cork-oak woodland and karst cliffs attracts walkers following trails toward the Orosei Gulf, reachable in under 30 minutes by car.
Accommodation in Galtellì is small-scale: agriturismo farms and B&Bs rather than large hotels, making it a quiet base compared to the resort strip at Cala Gonone. The nearest airport is Olbia Costa Smeralda, approximately 90 km north.
