Plan your stay in Orosei, Sardinia — gateway to the Gulf of Orosei's sea caves, cliff beaches, and the Selvaggio Blu coastal trek.
Orosei is a coastal town on Sardinia's eastern shore, roughly 40 km south of Nuoro in the Nuoro province. The town sits a few kilometres inland from its own gulf — the Gulf of Orosei — whose limestone cliffs, sea caves, and clear-water coves rank among the most photographed coastline in the Mediterranean. The old centre retains a medieval layout, with the church of San Giacomo Apostolo dating to the 15th century anchoring the historic quarter alongside watchtowers built against pirate raids.
Visitors arrive primarily for the gulf's beaches, most of which are reachable only by boat or long hiking trails through the Gennargentu National Park. Cala Luna, Cala Gonone, and Cala Sisine draw swimmers and snorkellers from June through September. Hikers use Orosei as a base for the Selvaggio Blu, a demanding multi-day coastal trek considered one of Italy's most technical long-distance routes. The town also hosts a modest agritourism circuit — local producers offer Cannonau wine and pecorino cheese typical of the Barbagia interior.
Orosei is served by the SS125 state road. The nearest airport is Olbia Costa Smeralda, approximately 100 km north, with regular connections to major Italian and European cities. Cagliari Elmas Airport lies roughly 200 km south.
