About Oniài/Onifai

Oniài/Onifai

Onifai — also spelled Oniài in the local Sardinian language — is a hillside comune of roughly 500 residents in the Baronia district of Nuoro province, eastern Sardinia. The village occupies a ridge above the Cedrino river valley at around 400 metres elevation, facing the limestone escarpments that run south toward the Gulf of Orosei. Cork oak woodland and dense macchia cover the surrounding slopes, giving the landscape a character distinct from Sardinia's crowded coastal resorts.

Travellers use Onifai as a base for the Baronia interior. The medieval village of Galtellì, which features a Romanesque church of Sant'Eufemia and figures on Italy's tentative UNESCO list, lies 8 km north. The Cedrino gorge offers hiking and canoe routes, while Orosei's sandy beaches are reachable in about 25 minutes by car. The area draws walkers, cyclists, and visitors looking for rural Sardinian life outside the peak-season coastal crowds. Accommodation is small-scale: agriturismo farms and family-run guesthouses make up most of the local lodging supply.

Onifai sits on the SS125 Orientale Sarda highway, the main artery along Sardinia's eastern flank. The nearest rail halt is Galtellì on the narrow-gauge Trenino Verde tourist railway. Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport, the principal gateway for north-eastern Sardinia, is approximately 90 km north by road.
