About Auronzo di Cadore
Auronzo di Cadore
Auronzo di Cadore sits at 864 m in the Belluno province of Veneto, wedged between the Ansiei valley and the artificial Lago di Santa Caterina — a reservoir created in 1927 that now frames the town's waterfront. The surrounding massifs of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009, define every view. The town is the closest settlement with full services to Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the three vertical pinnacles that are among the most photographed rock formations in the Alps — the trailhead lies roughly 12 km northeast via the toll road from Misurina.
Visitors split between summer trekkers and winter skiers. The Alta Pusteria and Cortina d'Ampezzo ski circuits are within 40–60 km. In summer, the via ferrata routes on the Marmarole and Sorapiss groups draw climbers from across Europe. July and August bring Italian families escaping lowland heat; the lake permits swimming and pedal boating. A smaller contingent comes for the Cadore cultural circuit — the region is the birthplace of Titian, born in nearby Pieve di Cadore around 1488.
The town centre clusters around Via Roma and the lakeside promenade. Most hotels are three-star properties open May through October, with a handful operating year-round. The nearest train station is Calalzo di Cadore, approximately 20 km south, connected by regional bus to Auronzo.
