About San Vito di Cadore
San Vito di Cadore
San Vito di Cadore sits in the Boite Valley of the Dolomites, Veneto, at roughly 1,010 metres above sea level. The town lies approximately 10 km south of Cortina d'Ampezzo along the SS51 state road, placing it within the UNESCO-listed Dolomites Natural Park. Monte Antelao — at 3,264 m the second-highest peak in the Dolomites — dominates the eastern skyline and defines the town's identity as a base for serious alpine activity.
Hikers arrive in summer to access the Antelao trail system and the Alta Via 1 long-distance route. Skiers come in winter for proximity to the Cortina ski area and the smaller slopes of Cortina's Socrepes sector. The town itself is compact: a parish church dating to the 16th century, a central square, and a handful of family-run hotels and guesthouses concentrated near the Via Nazionale. Most visitors use San Vito as a quieter, lower-cost alternative to Cortina, with road access to the Falzarego and Tre Croci passes within 30 minutes by car.
The nearest train station is Calalzo di Cadore, about 20 km south, served by regional trains from Venice Santa Lucia in roughly 2.5 hours. Dolomiti Bus coaches connect Calalzo to San Vito several times daily.
