About Peaio
Peaio
Peaio is a small mountain village in the Province of Belluno, set within the Dolomites of northeastern Italy. The surrounding peaks of the Cadore area rise sharply above the valley floor, placing Peaio within one of the most geologically dramatic landscapes in the Alps — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. The village sits close to the Piave River headwaters and within easy reach of Calalzo di Cadore, the nearest rail terminus connecting the area to Venice in roughly three hours.
Visitors come primarily for outdoor pursuits: hiking and via ferrata routes thread through the Marmarole and Spalti di Toro ranges nearby, while winter brings skiing access through the wider Dolomiti Superski circuit. The area attracts Italian families on summer retreat as well as walkers from across Europe following long-distance Alta Via routes. Accommodation is small-scale — agriturismi, family-run guesthouses, and mountain rifugi — reflecting the village's intimate character rather than resort-scale infrastructure.
The nearest airport is Treviso (TSF), approximately 110 km south, with Venice Marco Polo (VCE) a similar distance. A car is essential for most visitors; local roads connect Peaio to Pieve di Cadore, birthplace of the Renaissance painter Titian in 1488.
