About Calalzo di Cadore

Calalzo di Cadore

Calalzo di Cadore sits at 806 metres in the Cadore valley of northeastern Italy, roughly 30 km south of Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Veneto region. The town marks the southern terminus of the Ferrovia delle Dolomiti rail line, once connecting Calalzo to Cortina until its closure in 1964. That railway heritage still shapes the town: the old station building stands near the centre, and the former trackbed is now a cycling and walking path through the valley.

Visitors arrive mainly between June and September for hiking access into the Dolomiti d'Ampezzo natural park, and again in winter as a lower-altitude base for Cortina ski slopes. Lake Pieve, a reservoir formed by a 1950s dam on the Piave river, sits immediately west of town and draws anglers and kayakers in summer. The surrounding Cadore district is the historic homeland of Renaissance painter Titian, born in nearby Pieve di Cadore around 1488.

Calalzo di Cadore is reachable by train from Venice Santa Lucia station in approximately 3 hours, making it one of the few Dolomite-area towns with a direct rail connection to the Veneto plain.
